MASTER YOUR 30-SECOND COMMERCIAL.

As a smart home business owner you’ll need to compose a 30-second "elevator speech" and be able to answer succinctly and confidently every time someone asks what you do.

You’ll probably reinvent yourself many times so don’t worry about getting locked into just one variation. Different people in different environments will ask you what you do and you may change it up depending on the circumstances.

My FREE e-zine offers more tools, tips, technologies and tactics for unstoppable entrepreneurs!

When crafting your commercial, it’s smart home business to think in terms of what value you provide others. So it may go something like this:

“Hi, I’m Jane Doe and I’m a financial advisor. I help people envision what they want in their lives and together we implement strategies for helping them get there, whether they’re saving for retirement or they’re putting their kids through school.”

You might also add what you’re looking for in terms of introductions and referrals. “I’m looking for couples ages 35-55 who may be looking for unique ways to fund their kids’ education.”

And to borrow a line from David Sandler, what is the PAIN your product or service relieves? Like this:

"I'm looking for people in their 40s who are anxious about their financial future because they realize they haven't been investing or putting money away for their retirement -- and they may feel like it's too late."

If you’re selling a product, your commercial will be specific to the benefit your product provides. For example, “We manufacture a tool that helps firefighters cut through seat belts in emergency situations. I’m looking for introductions to fire department chiefs and other public safety officials whose firefighters have had difficulty rescuing people because of safety belts.”

Once you’ve written out your commercial, prune it down and smooth it out. MEMORIZE IT. And don’t deter from it when someone asks you what you do.

When I first started my home business I was sometimes caught off guard and stumbled and fumbled my way through my commercial, which made me lose confidence with the person I was speaking to and also created confusion for them. NOT smart home business! Eventually I mastered my commercial and I still practice it regularly, particularly before meetings and events where I’ll be called upon to state what my business is about.
