Here's one of my favorite home business hints: Don't be boring!

I have observed that people often put on a “business persona” for business interactions and networking. Professionalism is all well and good but sometimes people can become so incredibly lame and boring in business settings!

We tend to not bring up personal things or mention outside interests when we’re talking business, either because we don’t ask those kinds of questions of one another or perhaps we’re afraid of steering the conversation off track. As a result, business can be woefully devoid of humor and intimacy. (Women, on the other hand, do tend to connect on a more personal level. Take heed of home business hints like this one.)

While courtesy and professionalism are called for, keep in mind that your unique personality, sense of humor and way of expressing yourself is what often makes people choose to do business with you in the first place.

I’ve been in many situations where I waited for the customer or client to take the lead in how formal or casual our meeting would be, conversationally speaking. I was always relieved when the client would loosen up and make light of whatever we were working on.

Nowadays I never hesitate to add humor to my engagements and I know that much of my business comes as a result of putting people at ease and engendering trust, which comes from sharing oneself.

So don’t hold back. Allow your personality to be your greatest home business asset. After all, you’re the only “you” in the whole world – and that’s good for business.
