advice for home business
TOP 7 WORK FROM HOME HABITS
My best advice for home business is to have FUN and create the life you want from the day you start your business. That being said, here are 7 Work From Home Habits to make life a little more enjoyable:1. Eat breakfast, enjoy your coffee, and be present for loved ones early in the day. Here's my first piece of advice for home business: If you never ate breakfast before, start now. Make it a simple ritual that gets your day off on the right track. Savor the silence if you live alone. Savor the moments if you live with others. A leisurely breakfast is one of the great luxuries of having a home business. Phone calls can almost always wait. If you’re expecting an important call, temporarily put the ringer on. Otherwise, heed Timothy Ferris’ advice in The 4-Hour work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich . Resist the technological onslaught and get down to business. 3. Enter all contacts in a database management system – from the day you start your business. Forget Excel, it’s not sophisticated enough. And I've recently forsaken MS Access and even ACT! for my new love, CardScan, for the most comprehensive, on- and offline, synced up solution you can possibly imagine. My advice for home business is to schedule some time every week to update the entries (you should at least have phone, email and snailmail information - and if you want to really take it a step further, birthdays, spouse's names, etc.) and see who needs follow up. You’ll thank yourself when it’s time to reach them. 4. Learn basic bookkeeping and keep entries up to date. Check to see if your online banking syncs up with Quicken 2008 Home & Business or QuickBooks Pro 2008 – a big plus – because then you can skip data entry altogether. (My CPA recommends Quickbooks.) If it doesn’t, then keep on top of your receipts by setting aside a data entry hour once every couple of days. If your budget permits, hire a bookkeeper. Tim Ferris says two – and make sure they're your “top money makers.” Lengthy to-do lists never get done. Just ask yourself what three things would make a difference today. If you only get to one of those things, you already made a difference. Allow that. 6. Make each day a specific focus.
I love this tip from Joe Nunziata’s Spiritual Selling: How to Use the Attractor Sales System to Create Abundance in Your Business . Joe suggests having Preparation, Marketing, and Action Days. On each of those days you do tasks related solely to the theme of that day. It organizes your thoughts and allows you feel like you actually got something accomplished at the end of the day. 7. Take a day off. It took me seven years to get this one down but I have to say my “big day off” is the best day of the month! Plan for it – because as a home business owner, you never stop working. The 24/7 reality will catch up with you and you’ll find yourself slaving away as if you were back working for someone else. Never forget why you started your home business in the first place! Take back your time and own it. © 2008 Kennerly Clay
